Since 2009, vaccination against HPV infection has been available in Slovenia. HPV vaccination is carried out during the preventive medical check-up in the 6th grade of primary school. For those who missed this opportunity, HPV vaccination can be provided in our general practice clinics. Vaccination is free of charge for students up to the age of 26 who have not yet been vaccinated against HPV. For all others, vaccination is self-paid. Three doses are required within one year.
HPV infection is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. Most sexually active individuals become infected at least once in their lifetime with one or two types of HPV. In most cases, infections are temporary, cause no symptoms, and are cleared by the immune system within a few months. Infection with “low-risk HPV types” can lead to the development of genital warts (condylomas) and papillomas. Persistent infection with more dangerous “high-risk HPV types” can, in a small percentage of infected individuals, cause precancerous and cancerous changes of the vagina and cervix in women, penile cancer in men, and cancers of the anus and the oral–pharyngeal region in both sexes. HPV vaccination is also available at the Student Health Centre of the University of Ljubljana.
We invite all students under the age of 26 who have not yet been vaccinated to receive the vaccination free of charge, and all others (students aged over 26 and international students) to receive self-paid vaccination if they wish to protect themselves against HPV infection. The price of self-paid vaccination is EUR 75 per dose.
